I don’t know about where you are, but Southwest Missouri is HOT HOT HOT!!!!! Earlier this Spring, when we were having FREEZING temps, I started thinking about what to do with the kids this summer.
You see, I always have plans to do some school in the summer, but as the garden demands more and more attention, those noble ideas tend to go down the drain. But consistency is so important for Rudy, one of my kiddoes with Down syndrome, and he always loses skills when we take extended breaks, so I came up with a plan that fits school into the gardening! Thus, killing 2 birds with 1 stone! Happy dance💖.
The kids always make their own gardens anyway, so I thought, there’s more learning we can squeeze out of that! And that’s how it came to pass. Nature Study in the garden!
We love nature study and never can get enough of it! When we do nature study it doesn’t feel like we’re “doing school” at all, and that’s a perfect fit for summer. There’s journalling, and observation and drawing, measuring and are only a baby step out of the usual nature study realm. I added in other subjects that stretch it only a tiny bit more, like some relevant research. Viola’ practice in most every subject. . .painlessly 🙂
My kids gardens are just now being started. If you join me you won’t even be behind! I wrote it all up and even made charts and journal pages!
